I would like to make a quick presentation of Warsaw, the last city I visited in Europe this year.
Warsaw well represents what an Eastern European countries’ fan can expect: a mix of modernity and history.
This contrast is even stronger in Warsaw because it had been destroyed during WW 2. All the city had been bombed and even the historical area is nowadays not as it used to be.
Lots of restructuration works had been done in the historical area, using ruins of old buildings that were still standing up. Thus, one can see how the city was organised before WW2.
When crossing the border between the new part of the city and the historical area, it feels like getting in a small village.
However, most of the city now reflects all the reconstruction works that had been done around the historical area. The city is structured by large roads that intersect, forming perpendicular and parallel avenues surrounding by concrete buildings.
These new neighbourhoods are not very attractive for someone not used to Eastern European countries. But by walking in the city, you can see the real atmosphere of the city: trendy shops and cafés, underground culture which used disused buildings to create unique places.
The nightlife is also very interesting because it is multicultural. Universities there are international, so lots of foreigners live in Warsaw. And everything is cheaper that in France!
